The Pittsburgh Business Times, part of the American City Business Journals chain, is looking for a junior reporter to cover the energy and technology beats.
Preferred candidates will have at least two years experience as a reporter for a print or digital media outlet, a portfolio of clips that shows your best work and strong references.
Our reporters must marry strong traditional journalism skills — source building, sharp interviewing techniques, strong analytical and investigative reporting skills, clear writing, document use — with online and social media know-how.
They are expected to contribute both daily online posts and longform stories to our news products. Scoops matter, and reporters are expected to break important hard news online and use print and video to tell the story behind the headlines, providing deeper analysis of newsworthy events.

• Minimum of two years of professional journalism experience
• Ability to work independently and remotely
• Ability to break news and identify newsworthy events and sources
• Strong writing, analytical and interviewing skills
• Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person and online, and develop sources and an audience
• Comfortable with constant change
• Competitive, collaborative, curious
• Mastery of social media and digital interaction
• Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
• Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
• Understanding imperatives of multiple platforms — print, mobile, Internet, etc.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Own the beat audience and conversation
• Build source network relentlessly
• Attend both Business Times and industry-related events. When relevant to their beats, reporters must work in partnership with the publisher, editor and event directors to select speakers and topics that will grow event attendance and audience.
• Work collaboratively with editors, photographers, videographers, designers and others to maximize the impact and accessibility of stories reported
• Contribute at least three online posts per day
• Contribute one people and one enterprise story to the weekly print paper, including candidates for the weekly “centerpiece” story
• Develop and curate a reporter page/section spread each week in the print paper
