Philly Inquirer seeks editorial/opinion writer

The Philadelphia Inquirer seeks a writer with depth, versatility and speed to contribute commentary and editorials. This writer should be willing and able to explore how to deliver commentary in as many forms as possible and on a variety of platforms.

DUTIES:

  • Become a strong, trusted and compelling voice on issues facing the city and the region.
  • Contribute commentary in a variety of forms for digital and print
  • Write staff editorials, opinion columns and essays, as well as quick-turn opinion pieces on trending topics for digital audiences
  • Play a key role on the editorial board, helping to shape the editorial voice while also contributing occasional columns to the opinion pages
  • Explain complex issues to readers on a broad range of topics, and be able to take well-informed positions on community issues
  • Develop sources and seek diverse viewpoints
  • Use social media both as a reporting tool and as a venue for promoting work

SKILLS:

  • A strong interest in local, state, national and international issues
  • Ability to write persuasively about complex public-policy questions
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of the team, collaborating with other
    editorial board members who represent a diverse range of viewpoints
  • Basic data literacy and analysis skills and ability to build simple charts, graphs, maps with in-house tools
  • Ability to gather, edit and post basic video and audio clips
  • Ability to interpret audience analytics to inform decisions

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • There is regular evening and weekend work with varied hours – Monday through Sunday
