Philly Inquirer seeks editor for Future of Work project

The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking a detail-oriented and innovative editor to lead a collaborative reporting project focused on the critically important issue of The Future of Work in Philadelphia. In this role, the Editor will spearhead a one-year, grant-funded project focusing on how the city and region can create more family-sustaining jobs as well as exploring potential solutions for stronger job creation for the working- and middle class against a backdrop of epic change spawned by the coronavirus pandemic.

The project is designed to provide reporting on best practices across the country as well as help shape the rapidly-evolving local and national conversation about the future of work. The goal is to explore the public policy, political and cultural dynamic in Philadelphia to help citizens as well as business and government leaders better understand the problem and potential solutions.

This news initiative will be supported by existing talent in the Inquirer newsroom and product team as well as content partners in Philadelphia’s vibrant news ecosystem. This force multiplier effect will allow the content to be distributed across multiple channels to reach a larger, more diverse audience.

We are looking for a proven leader who can manage a project of this scope in a way that combines strong digital journalism skills, extensive data analysis acumen and superb reporting, writing and editing to shed light on this critical issue. The editor will need to work collaboratively with the partnering newsrooms and Inquirer product team.

What You’ll Do

Develop the coverage plan for this yearlong grant-funded project
Report, write and edit stories on the subject of the future of work in Philadelphia
Report directly to the AME/Health & Business to coordinate coverage
Work cross-functionality with reporters across the Newsroom and Product Teams
Develop a freelance network with experts on workforce development
Collaborate with local media partners
Participate in several public events on the subject
Document results, milestones and activities of the project

Who We’re Looking For

A proven track record of developing and editing projects of this magnitude
Experience reporting on the labor/workforce issue in general and the future of work
The ability to create a coverage plan that is ambitious and purposeful, and tells stories in a variety of ways on multiple platforms in close collaboration with a product team
Significant management experience
The ability to edit effectively and quickly as well as strong reporting and writing skills
The experience and desire to collaborate with other newsrooms and product teams

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
