Panola Watchman seeks a general assignment reporter

The Panola Watchman, Panola County’s leading newspaper and news source is seeking as full-time General Assignment Reporter. As the General Assignment Reporter you will provide coverage of stories across Panola County and the surrounding area. You will be a part of a combined East Texas newsroom, which features reporters based in Panola, Marshall, and Kilgore. Collaboration with this team will be a vital part of your job. Qualified candidates must be proficient in the coverage of breaking news and the creation of enterprise content.

The General Assignment Reporter typically works on a Monday through Friday schedule, although some night and weekend work is required depending on story assignments.

Requirements:

  • Reports on various types of news in Panola County and its surrounding areas including city and county governments, schools, spot news, and features.
  • Assist the Panola County, Marshall and Kilgore combined newsroom, as necessary.
  • Perform the role of a visual journalist, as called upon, providing photography and video to go with your stories.
  • Support the copy editing and page design of the newspaper as needed.
  • Work with your editor to understand analytics and what content we should be covering.
  • Familiar with AP style guide.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field.
  • 1 year of experience, though recent college graduates will be considered.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Acceptable driving record and the ability to drive where needed.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently; Spanish-language proficiency would be a plus.
