PennLive and PA Media Group, one of the state’s top breaking news organizations, is searching for a night breaking news and cops reporter.
We’re not satisfied with just covering crashes, fires or crimes. We want to break the news then dig deeper into public safety issues raised by those stories. We want to own the story by asking tough questions about systemic problems and the actions of police and others tasked with serving the public.
The ideal candidate will be able to tell our readers about the people affected by tragedy, and celebrate heroes when we find them. And we want to do it with compelling, conversational stories that focus on solutions as well as problems.
This job will involve working from 3 pm to 11 pm and some weekend work, so solid news judgement and the ability to work independently are important. So is a desire to improve and an ability to triage and juggle multiple stories.
Required education, experience and skills:
- BA in Journalism, Communications, or related field/experience
- Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic standards and story structure
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally
- Experience building, maintaining and engaging an active audience and track record developing sources
- Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
- Demonstrated capability in capitalizing on high-value topics by engaging audiences in frequency and urgency
- Mastery of social media and digital interaction
- Skills for utilizing a broad set of tools to tell stories and engage the audience
