Oregon Humanities is looking for writers

Oregon Humanities magazine is now reading nonfiction submissions for our Summer 2022 issue, “Memory”. Writers with all levels of experience are encouraged to submit.

Deadline: 11 April 2022

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Oregon Humanities connects people and communities through conversation, storytelling, and participatory programs to inspire understanding and collaborative change.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The theme for our Summer 2022 issue is “Memory.” Submissions will close on April 11, 2022.

We want to hear stories about remembering and forgetting, both as individuals and in our communities. We’re interested in all sorts of memories: treasured and troubling, real and false, public and private.

We’re looking for nonfiction pieces that explore the people and events we choose to commemorate and those that are buried or erased, justly or unjustly. Explore how memory works and why it often doesn’t. Consider the things that aid remembering—lists, journals, souvenirs, monuments—and those that help with forgetting.

We welcome all forms of nonfiction writing, including essays, journalism, and excerpts from forthcoming or recently published books. Successful submissions will reflect our vision of an Oregon that invites diverse perspectives, invites challenging questions, and strives for just communities. We encourage submissions from writers of all levels of experience.

We encourage stories created with or by communities—classrooms, neighborhoods, congregations, or any other group with shared interests and experiences. Some examples follow:

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN SUBMISSION

Please send drafts of personal essays, which should push beyond simple narrative and consider larger thematic questions. If you’re pitching a journalistic or researched piece, please send a proposal, links to your clips, if any, and tell us why you’re the person to write this story. Features generally range between 1,500 and 4,000 words.
