Observer.com seeks business reporter

Observer is searching for a business reporter, responsible for keeping a pulse on the most up-to-the minute industry news and information. What are the power players doing, and why do we need to know about it? This position will be our readers’ go-to for smart, quick takes — easily digestible, highly informative, and in an on-brand voice that never skip a beat.

The ideal candidate is high energy with an unwavering passion for business. Ability to think, act, and write quickly—spotting stories in real time and covering them in a compelling and shareable way for a digital audience. To succeed in this role, a reporter will have to be a self-starter and excel at working on a team.

For those who scan bulleted lists of responsibilities:

  • Pitch 8-10 compelling news articles per day
  • Cover key figures in the sphere and craft original, short-form stories on tight deadlines
  • Track emerging business trends, while collaborating with editors
  • Collaborate with teams across the newsroom to create multimedia stories that are optimized for search, social and mobile audiences

  • Fast, agile learner with demonstrated experience breaking news
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field
  • Collaboration, willingness to learn, flexibility

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
