NY Times seeks a senior producer for its tech podcast

The New York Times Audio team is looking for a senior audio producer to help us launch a new tech podcast. The producer should love the complex world of the internet. You should also bring an enthusiasm for launching brand-new shows into the world, a spirit of collaboration (you’ll be working with the hosts closely in the studio and with the wider Times newsroom) and a willingness to create bold new work in audio. Not only will you help develop the show, you’ll dig into all aspects of production, including pitching topics, booking and prepping guests, assembling sessions and editing tape with ease and speed.

The position is 20 hrs/week, ideally based in San Francisco but open to New York and remote locations.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Audio team and Technology desk leadership to develop the ambitions of a new show

  • Work with hosts and guests in studio, booking and pre-interviewing guests and prepping hosts

  • Write interview questions, research, fact-check and collaborate on scripting

  • Produce full interviews from start to finish

  • Make editorial decisions about length, format and tone before and during production

  • Cut tape on a tight deadline, with technical proficiency and with minimal oversight

  • Consistently select tape to shape a coherent and compelling conversation, using music, archive materials where appropriate

  • Receive and incorporate edits

  • Work with engineer to finalize technical aspects of the show

Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years experience in audio production

  • Strong interest in technology and the internet

  • Experience producing interviews, engineering recording sessions, and shaping interviews with a sense of the big idea

  • Demonstrated success in creating innovative content under pressure

  • Expertise in audio editing, ideally using Pro Tools

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, deadlines, news judgment and time-management

  • Experience working with hosts

  • An independent work ethic combined with a love for and patience with the collaborative process

  • Experience working on new show from the ground up is a plus

  • Experience in a fast-paced news environment

  • Use editorial judgment reflective of Times mission and principles
