New York Times Opinion is looking for a seasoned editor to lead our coverage of business, economics and technology. This editor needs to be creative and versatile, able to work with the world’s leading economists and business people, as well as with small-business owners, social scientists and workers of all kinds to dig into the most urgent issues of the day.
This editor will work with colleagues across Opinion, including our award-winning graphics and video teams, to develop storytelling that is agenda-setting, thought-provoking and accessible.
We’re looking for someone with wide-ranging experience and sharp editorial judgment, who can help non-journalists translate their writing into clear, absorbing prose and develop insightful pieces and illuminating arguments about major ongoing issues like inflation, unemployment, the labor market, Covid’s impact on the economy, and the future of work and the workplace. A background in business reporting and economics is a plus but not a requirement; a passion for the subject matter is. This editor must be a team player, able to collaborate with other editors and our audience team to find ways to deepen our engagement with Times readers and find new audiences for our work.
This editor will commission and edit guest essays, edit frequent contributors to Times Opinion and bring new voices to The Times for our daily Opinion report, as well as the Sunday Review and longer-term projects. As part of the editorial leadership of Times Opinion, this editor would help shape our overall strategy and collaborate across the department on coverage of business, economics and technology.
Responsibilities include:
Defining the vision, audience and priorities for Times Opinion’s business/economics and technology coverage
Developing a wide range of voices about the biggest news and ideas
Anticipating and reacting to the news with smart, forward-thinking commissioning of outside writers
Regularly developing, pitching and helping execute high-impact enterprise pieces, including collaboration with multimedia teams, including design, photo, graphics, audio and video, on how to best tell these stories
Cultivating and maintaining a network of regular writers
Coordinating with the audience team to maximize the reach and impact of the work
Working with the managing editor on scheduling and prioritizing the research, copy editing and production workflow
Helping maintain the highest standards for fact checking, accuracy and fairness, and working closely with the research team
Continually assessing and calibrating the journalism Opinion publishes in this coverage area, considering news value, the range and diversity of writers and the tension between productivity versus impact and influence.
Management responsibilities that may include annual performance reviews, managing schedules and long-term goals, recruiting new talent and managing the career development of existing staff.
Experience and qualifications:
At least 5 years of experience editing, including some experience commissioning writers.
