NY Times opinion department seeks biz/econ editor

The New York Times Opinion department is looking for an imaginative and energetic senior staff editor to oversee the Op-Ed section’s global coverage of business and economics.

This editor should be a devoted and deeply critical reader of business news in the broadest sense, interested in everything from finance to manufacturing to trade, Google to GM to Goldman Sachs. An understanding of the business side of the tech world will be important.

The ideal candidate would have several years experience writing or editing business news, as well as commissioning opinion essays. Creative, offbeat and humorous approaches to helping readers think about complex issues will also be a major plus.

Responsibilities for this editor will include:

  • Working with all parts of the Opinion section — outside contributors, editorial writers, columnists and other Op-Ed editors — to define the most interesting and consequential issues of the day, week and year.
  • Conceptualizing, commissioning and editing several compelling and provocative Op-Eds each week, on both breaking news and longer-term trends, for domestic and international audiences.
  • Building our stable of authoritative and engaging outside writers from around the globe.
  • Writing sharp social copy and headlines, and helping devise the smartest approaches to growing our audience and deepening their engagement with our coverage.
  • Helping oversee a newsletter highlighting opinion economics pieces.
  • Working with the Sunday Review editor on longer, more writerly essays for that section.
  • Coordinating with the international opinion editor on Op-Eds for the global edition.
  • Working with our photo, graphics and video teams to broaden and enliven our digital opinion journalism.

This position is represented by the News Guild of New York.
