NPR’s Business Desk is seeking a Reporter/Correspondent to cover technology from Silicon Valley, California.
NPR is an established leader in coverage of international affairs, politics, economics and other subjects. We are eager to raise our profile in coverage of technology as well. This hire will be an important part of that effort.
This chosen candidate will help lead a team of journalists covering one of the most significant business, economic and cultural stories of our age: The transformation of almost every aspect of our lives by digital technology. The successful candidate will cover globally-influential companies based in Silicon Valley.
This person will develop sources inside and outside of the industry and is expected to produce stories about social media, artificial intelligence, venture capital, privacy and cybersecurity. A thorough knowledge of technology and high level reporting and storytelling skills are essential.
Radio experience and a proven track record in covering technology are strongly preferred. The selected candidate will report on air for NPR shows and newscast segments, as well as online for NPR.org. The candidate will also develop ideas and report stories for a new technology podcast.
- Develops ideas/proposals for reports and programs.
- Conceives, proposes, plans, and researches ideas for stories and program segments. Takes responsibility for developing a comprehensive beat in technology.
- Plays an essential role in development of a new technology podcast.
- Develops news sources.
- Participates in departmental planning for coverage.
- Gathers information and materials for reports and programs.
- Gathers materials on tape and otherwise, through interviews, press conferences, and direct coverage of events. This may involve travel on short notice.
- Prepares and presents reports and program segments.
- Creates original and complementary content for the Web, including Q&As, essays, text versions of stories, photos and other material as requested.
- Closely follows the technology news, technological innovation and business news in general.
- Covers breaking news with live coverage and two-ways with program hosts.
- Fulfills administrative obligations arising from assignments, such as filing prompt and accurate expense records and program information/summaries; maintaining contact with editors and appropriate producers; keeping editors and appropriate producers informed about assignments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Prepares and presents special reports, series, documentaries, and program segments examining important subjects in depth.Does enterprise reporting, including the generation of ideas and development of plans for such reporting.
- Travels as assigned for breaking news coverage and to produce a variety of major stories, features, and program segments for various NPR programs and npr.org.
- Possesses and uses extensive broadcast production skills in the preparation of program materials and segments.
