NPR seeks an editor 1, digital

We are looking for an editor to help ensure that NPR is nimble in its digital storytelling and highly responsive to breaking news and ongoing news stories. In particular, this editor would lead efforts to cover daily news, stand up and edit live blogs whenever news warrants, and help other newsroom partners.

This means working collaboratively with other content creators across the newsroom to solicit contributions to live blogs and ensuring that they are accurate, comprehensive and competitive. In addition to editing content, you will often be reporting and writing stories, as well.

The right candidate for this position is interested in daily news, has impeccable news judgment and thrives in an environment that is fast-paced and may require pivoting at a moment’s notice. This person should be someone who enjoys multitasking.

This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with digital team supervisors to unearth daily story ideas, write news stories and, as warranted, launch, edit, and populate live blogs for unplanned and planned news events
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the network to solicit contributions for live blogs
  • Report and edit digital stories as appropriate, ensuring that our writing is properly vetted and accurate
  • Write for the web with speed, accuracy and voice while on deadline and/or under pressure
  • Tackle multiple short stories daily, all written conversationally and with a digital audience in mind
  • Be well-versed in audience metrics and social signals to help inform decision-making
  • Ensure that all materials meet NPR News standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, honesty and impartiality
  • Show flexibility in priorities and subject matter under tight deadlines

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, or a writing-intensive discipline (or the equivalent combination of education and experience

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Experience editing national or international news writing on deadline
  • Demonstrated excellence in reporting and writing for digital
  • Demonstrated news judgment
  • A passion for digital reporting, writing and editing
  • Demonstrated ability to work at different levels of a newsroom
  • Demonstrated familiarity with NPR journalism
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
  • Ability to both work independently and collaborate with others
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public

WORK LOCATION:

  • Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the [Washington, DC / Culver City / New York City / Chicago] office at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPR-supported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.

JOB TYPE: This is a full time, exempt position.

Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $97,500-$102,500 plus benefits.
