Newsday seeks a deputy AME for biz coverage

The Deputy AME-Business is responsible for the development and planning of coverage on all Newsday platforms, including NewsdayTV. The deputy AME takes on responsibilities of the Assistant Managing Editor-Business during that AME’s absence. The deputy AME directs coverage by supervising reporters, working across departmental lines, coordinating coverage with Newsday’s online platforms and monitoring staff activity. The candidate also is responsible for mentoring, training, motivating and evaluating the team members to provide the highest quality, most relevant content to Newsday consumers and the community across all platforms.

Essential Duties & Functions

  • Prepare news budgets for daily news meetings.
  • Participate in news meetings.
  • Plan and direct daily- and long-term coverage of stories.
  • Edit daily, Business cover, Page 1 or top news stories/packages.
  • Work with other editorial departments to coordinate coverage and placement of stories in the paper and online.
  • Supervise and provide performance feedback.
  • Assist with administrative and managerial duties.
  • Understands and promulgates goals of the department and company.
  • Participates in recruitment and hiring for the Business team.
  • Sets daily staffing requirements.
  • Interacts with various departments, including news executives, online editors, layout-copy editing, Human Resources and other staff departments on administrative and other job-related responsibilities.
  • Helps develop and oversee multimedia projects for online (alternative storytelling, social media, etc.).

Essential Job Knowledge & Skills

  • A minimum of five (5) years’ newsroom management experience or related experience, including editing, reporting, multimedia and supervising a journalism team at a medium- to large-sized media outlet required.
  • Experience in local news coverage required.
  • Strong management and journalism skills.
  • Proven, sound news judgment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of journalism ethics.
  • Understanding of the ever-evolving news media industry.
  • Be up on multimedia trends, especially alternative storytelling and social media.
  • Knowledge of Long Island preferred.

Compensation

  • The annual base salary range for this position is $117,000.00 to $125.000.00, commensurate with experience.
