Newsday Media Group seeks a part time editor assistant – sports

The sports copy desk seeks a part-time editor who can edit copy, write headlines and display copy on tight deadlines for print, web, narrative stories, video, online alternative storytelling and social media. It is a hybrid position that requires the candidate to work from Newsday’s offices in Melville for two of the four weekly shifts. Candidate must work nights and weekends.

Essential Duties & Functions:

  • Communicate/coordinate with other sports desk members on stories and jump in to help wherever needed.
  • Handle news quickly with great attention to accuracy and fairness and detail. Must be able to ask big-picture questions as well as sweat the details.
  • Review stories digitally and in print.
  • Act on newsroom metrics to support coverage that serves our loyal subscribers and helps Newsday build subscribers and new, diverse audiences.

Essential Job Knowledge & Skills:

  • Must have strong news judgment, editing skills and sports knowledge.
  • Must be collaborative and communicative with colleagues across all platforms.
  • Ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible and varied schedule to include weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed to support the business.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Flexibility to handle different types of editing tasks on any given day – stories, video scripts, graphics, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate and build a rapport with others.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel throughout Long Island, as required.
  • Driver’s license in good standing and reliable means of transportation are required.

Compensation:

  • The hourly base rate for this role is $34.78.
