News & Observer seeks business editor

The business editor of The (Raleigh) News & Observer is responsible for assigning and editing daily business stories, monitoring the business wires and guiding our reporters as they cover their beats for digital and print products.

The editor is responsible for overseeing the production of our daily business page and our Sunday Work & Money section, and editing 1A business stories. In addition to these duties, the editor covers real estate, both commercial and residential, writing a twice-monthly column and about news and trends on the beat.

The editor also designs the daily business page, promotes our business content through social media, and looks for ways to tell our business stories through video.

Job Requirements

  • Candidate should have at least 5 years of experience covering business news, preferably real estate. Design and video skills or a willingness to learn those skills a plus. A four-year degree is required.
  • Candidate must have a valid NC drivers license and also 100,000/300,000 liability insurance.

Candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screen and a background check.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
