New York Times seeks start-ups reporter in San Fran

The New York Times is seeking an ambitious, fearless and energetic reporter to cover the Wild West world of Silicon Valley start-ups and venture capital.

From tiny tech companies in a garage (and more often these days beginning in a tech incubator) that turn into unicorns like Airbnb and Palantir and Uber, to venture capitalists fighting with founders, the start-up scene is equal parts innovation, riches, failure and bad behavior.

Applicants should think creatively about the beat, aggressively source up, be skeptical and able to pierce the start-up hype, and also tackle a variety of stories, from profiles to financial pieces to trend stories to investigations.

This candidate should be a collegial self-starter and enthusiastic about new forms of storytelling — including visual storytelling — with at least several years of experience covering technology.

Applications should include clips, a resume, and a memo outlining the biggest themes on the start-up beat, how those themes should be covered and what types of stories should not be covered in the beat.

This Guild position is based in San Francisco.
