New York Times seeks economics editor

The New York Times is seeking a creative and inspiring leader to direct and help define our economics coverage. We are especially open to new ideas about how best to structure and execute top-flight economics coverage in the digital media age.

Candidates should have a deep background in editing and/or writing about economics, a demonstrated ability to translate arcane subjects into compelling stories for general interest readers, and a sense of evangelism about the importance of economics to the national and international conversation.

This editor will be expected to distinguish our coverage with on-the-ground reporting on how economic trends and policy changes affect different people, communities, regions, industries and the nation as a whole. Candidates must also be adept at sifting through data to recognize and highlight revealing trends, and at finding engaging ways to present stories.

The economics editor will oversee a team of dedicated economics reporters and columnists, We will also look to this editor to infuse the broader news report with timely, sophisticated and accessible economics coverage, by partnering with other desks, pairing up reporters and serving as an advisor and facilitator throughout the newsroom.

Candidates should have strong leadership skills, be self-directing and highly collaborative, and possess impeccable news judgment.

This excluded position, based in New York, is open to internal and external candidates. External candidates should apply to nytbusiness@nytimes.com
