The beat will be a window onto the Detroit automakers and foreign companies producing vehicles for the American market – as manufacturers, employers, marketers, style makers. It will explore what those companies are doing on environmental and safety issues, their interaction with regulators, and their role in the nation’s economy and international trade. But a major emphasis will be on providing insight into the ways traditional automakers and disruptive upstarts are reinventing models of ownership, propulsion and operation: ride-sharing, electric vehicles, self-driving technology.
The ideal candidate will have a background in automotive, economics and/or technology coverage as well as a record of distinguished beat reporting, including a proven ability to break news, spot trends, and develop illuminating, compelling features. The candidate should be adept at writing in a variety of formats, able to juggle deadline demands with long-term efforts, and both comfortable and creative with a full set of digital and multimedia tools.
This Guild position will be based in the Detroit area.
