New York Times seeks a staff editor, audience Opinion

New York Times Opinion strives to expand the breadth and depth of its audience, while deepening the relationship with readers. The Staff Editor, Audience, will support the Opinion Audience team in this goal, while exemplifying the mission and values of The New York Times. The job is fast-paced and suited to an energetic, organized and creative person who is passionate about journalism in all its forms.

The position will be based in the London office and will be expected to be available at least one weekend day. Candidates should maintain flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Determine story lineups for Times Opinion’s homepage based on editorial judgment, analytics, department priorities and diversity of viewpoints
  • Exhibit excellent judgment and audience-sensitive framing
  • Write and A/B test headlines to help a piece reach its maximum audience
  • Edit and curate email newsletters
  • Optimize individual pieces for search
  • Craft and pitch copy for push notifications and email alerts
  • Project manage audience strategy for special projects, coordinating with editors and the design team
  • Use audience data to evaluate story performance and identify opportunities for growth
  • Respond to breaking news, updating the homepage, onsite pieces and newsletters as appropriate
  • Represent the diversity of voices in Times Opinion on all of our off-platform channels, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
  • Post stories and execute reader-driven projects in creative, impactful and engaging ways on social platforms
  • May be required to fill in for colleagues on the Opinion Audience team as needed

  • Proven experience working in a digital news media environment
  • Strong news judgment and interest in Opinion journalism
  • Ability to make decisions and meet deadlines under high pressure
  • Discretion in handling sensitive material
  • Open to working with a diversity of voices
  • Devotion to the highest standards of accuracy, precision and verification
  • Keen sense of, and interest in, the social media and search landscape with experience writing social media posts and in-depth knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Sensitivity to visual design and user experience
  • Ability to change direction quickly as news requires
  • Superb and demonstrable research skills
  • Flexibility in schedule, including the ability to work nights and weekends and some holidays
