Our ideal candidate is someone who loves politics and with an extraordinary interest in campaigns, elections, and government. Reporters are expected to move effortlessly from covering statewide elected officials and candidates to reporting on local politics. Strong writing skills are essential.
The ability to forge solid, trusted, two-sided relationships with public officials, party leaders, and campaign staff is of great importance – as is the ability to cast your personal opinions aside and look at every story objectively. New Jersey politics demands a strong will and a good sense of humor.
Longtime New Jerseyans and out-of-staters willing to move to New Jersey are both encouraged to apply. And we especially like fresh, young faces eager to begin their careers.
Reporters are expected to work on brisk deadlines, producing brief and long-form stories on issues from assigned topics and generating story ideas in consultation with the editor. Being self motivated and having a great work ethic is a big plus.
Key responsibilities:
Demonstrate comfort with data and social media
Reporters are expected to work regular hours with the ability to shift their day quickly depending on breaking news. We want you to attend political events not because you must but because you wouldn’t want to be elsewhere. And you need to value campaigns and elections as much as governing.
