We’re seeking a breaking news reporter with a keen eye for general news and a knack for covering big moments in sports to join NBC News Digital.
Responsibilities & Skills:
- In this position, you will join an established team working an evening shift that includes weekends
- The reporter should be able to cover a broad range of news, including the serious and lighthearted
- The topics this team regularly covers includes extreme weather, entertainment, crime, cultural events, human interest, and social media news for an audience that gets its news from a trusted media brand
- Given the schedule, this reporter should also be comfortable covering and live-blogging major moments in sports and sports culture — PGA golfer being tackled, Conor McGregor knocking out the Heat mascot, the rare no-hitter, a giant brawl at the Floyd Mayweather fight — as well as the biggest events, such as the Super Bowl
- As a breaking news reporter, you’ll pick up the phone and start reporting and be ready to file within minutes of a major breaking story, matching your style to the topic and keeping your cool throughout
- Once a story is published, you’ll be prepared to rapidly update it while recognizing that information still needs to be thoroughly vetted
- You’ll be comfortable thinking creatively about coverage and making the most of the digital storytelling format
- You’ll make sure that the stories you’re writing have the best photos, videos and other elements to provide context to a reader as a story is developing
- Actively monitor sources of breaking news (Dataminr, Twitter, wires, internal communications) and be prepared to jump on news seconds after it happens
- Expertise in writing SEO headlines
- Writing clean, fast and accurate copy, headlines and photo and video captions
- Communicating with a team of other reporters and editors
- Make full use of the range of NBC News resources, including network news gathering and multimedia
