Mother Jones is looking for writers

Mother Jones is seeking pitches for our print culture section Mixed Media, especially those that examine structures of power, explore identity, or illuminate cultural undercurrents.

These could take several forms. Our reported essays weave together media critique, historical/literary research, interviews, and/or personal narrative to make a clear argument.

Deadline: Ongoing, but for ideas to be considered for our summer July/Aug issue, I’d need to hear by April 8.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Mother Jones is an investigative news organization that goes deep on the biggest  of the moment, from politics and criminal and racial justice to education, climate change, and food/agriculture. Mixed Media is Mother Jones’s print culture section that examines structures of power, explore identity, or illuminate cultural undercurrents.

EXAMPLES OF WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Becca Andrews explored the aftershocks of purity culture
  • Another excellent piece: Ramenda Cyrus examined the mythology and reality of Igbo Landing
  • Dispatches give us an on-the-ground (or from within-the-web) look at how a slice of society is reckoning with ideas and cultural trends. We sent Jacob Rosenberg  to Silicon Valley to see why techies are so into stoicism

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN SUBMISSION

How to pitch: Include a clear central argument or narrative; show your voice and superb writing abilities; make a case for why your idea matters now; and include a plan for how you’d structure your story. Include links to previous work.

Use “culture pitch” in the subject line.

COMPENSATION

  • Starting rate is $3000 for lead essays- 1500-2500 word stories.
