The Role: Morningstar seeks an experienced financial journalist for a new position of markets columnist to join our New-York based markets coverage team.
Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will need to do much more than repeat conventional wisdom and market pundits’ coverage of factors driving the market’s ups and downs. This role requires the experience and knowledge to size up long- or short-term moves in the market and know the data that it will take to back up their views. When needed, our markets columnist will take a thoughtful contrarian view or engage in outright myth-busting. It will be just as important to help investors understand why they shouldn’t worry about the latest headlines as it is to highlight trends that might require action or present opportunities. The mandate is to provide context for investors as fast-moving market factors may challenge long term assumptions.
We are looking for a writer who can bring a lively, engaging style, with a proven ability to take complex subjects and make them accessible to readers whose investing experience may range from owning a target-date fund in their 401(k) to actively managing a complex portfolio on their own.
The focus for this role will be on U.S. markets with a tilt toward global trends when warranted. You’ll be expected to write about trends among equities – both high level and individual stocks – bonds, commodities and alternative assets such as cryptocurrencies.
For this role you will be able to tap into Morningstar’s extensive databases and our hundreds of in-house analysts that cover individual stocks, funds, credit and macro trends. In addition, you will be expected to bring your own access to knowledgeable sources from outside Morningstar.
The successful candidate will be asked to write, on average, three columns a week, and be able to switch gears on a moment’s notices when big news breaks.
Qualifications
• Significant experience writing on the financial markets and a passion for the subject
• Proven ability to write on deadline and same-day turnaround
• Strong news judgement in identifying subjects for columns
• Ability to turn data into narratives and graphics
• Curious, creative thinker with a collaborative approach to producing commentary and storytelling
• An understanding of ESG themes and approaches that can be integrated into general markets coverage
• A bachelor’s degree is required
