Money magazine seeks senior editor

Money magazine is looking for a senior editor in New York.

The senior editor will play a vital role in promoting the mission of Money by assigning and editing dynamic service content for print and digital platforms. This editor will filter news through the lens of it affects personal finances, translating stories in the headlines into clear action steps for an audience focused on achieving financial security.

This editor will oversee coverage of real estate, spending, travel, tech and the front-of-book “First” section, among other personal finance topics. In addition, this editor will collaborate with brand leaders to grow one or more of Money’s enterprise data analysis franchises like Best Places to Live, Best Value Colleges, Best Cell Phone Plans, Best Banks and Best Credit Cards.

You will:

  • Assign and edit for print and digital, managing front of book pages and one feature per month, along with daily web stories
  • Manage a stable of writers, both staff and freelance, and introduce new writers to the Money brand
  • Project manage a major data-driven franchise: setting a schedule, dedicating staff, overseeing analyses and editing the final project
  • Work collaboratively with beat writers to develop ideas for print and digital
  • Pitch ideas yourself for features and franchises that not only align with the brand’s mission, but advance the brand
  • Write engaging display copy for print and grabby, SEO-friendly copy for web

You are:

  • A service journalist: Money’s aim is to provide readers with advice that will help them achieve financial security. To join our team, you have to have a knack for creating stories that are exceedingly well-reported and have high-utility – giving people the tools and information they need to act in their financial best interest. You get extra points if you have experience translating complex jargon into everyday prose that’s enjoyable to read.
  • Passionate about personal finance: You have at least a few years’ experience editing content in this subject area (or a closely related one). But more important, you’re excited to be an evangelist of our mission—which is to help people better manage their money so that they can live the lives they want.
  • A writer’s editor: You’re a collaborative person who builds relationships with your writers and motivates without micromanaging to deliver the best possible end product. Our team ranges from recent grads to seasoned pros, so you’ll need to know how to guide both. We also expect that you’ll come with your own roster of A+ writers.
