Modern Healthcare seeks a political reporter in DC

Modern Healthcare, the pre-eminent source for healthcare business news, is seeking an experienced reporter to cover health care policy and politics. This position reports, writes and produces for all Modern Healthcare print and digital publications and is expected to generate other forms of editorial content including but not limited to blog posts, podcasts, video, webcasts and social media.

We are a creative and exciting workplace that values innovation and prioritizes in-depth, analytical reporting and narrative writing. The position will give the successful candidate an opportunity to break stories in the hotly competitive health care journalism space and serve our core audience of industry professionals and policymakers. Ideal candidates will also have sources within Capitol Hill and the savvy to make solid connections that allow this reporter to have a competitive edge.

Qualified applicants must have a deep interest in the industry and be able to tell stories that dig deep into trends, policy and programs that are changing the way healthcare is delivered and paid for in the U.S.

This position is based in Washington, DC.

Basic Requirements:

  • Three years minimum experience covering Capitol Hill and D.C. policy or health care business news

  • Able to manage multiple assignments to cover daily news, analysis and long-term features

  • Experience generating story ideas and developing sources to produce scoops in a competitive environment

  • Consistently meet deadlines and file concise, clean copy that shows how action in the Beltway will affect hospitals, insurers and other health care companies

  • Desire to collaborate and work with other reporters

  • B.A. in journalism or related field

Preferences:

  • Interest in data and multimedia reporting. Modern Healthcare has a data team and regularly includes data, graphics, video or podcast material with its reporting

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
