Modern Healthcare seeks a news editor

The News Editor at Modern Healthcare is a key leadership role on a team of journalists focused on empowering healthcare leaders to improve patient care. This editor is responsible for guiding reporters on daily coverage and enterprise articles for print and online—including features and news analysis. The news editor will work alongside the other Modern Healthcare editors — managing editor, digital and managing editor— as well as our Editor. Together, this group will use audience behavior data to decide on all editorial content being produced, as well as what distribution platforms (digital, print, networks, etc.) to leverage in the promotion of that work.

This editor will guide reporting with a specific national audience of healthcare leaders in mind, helping steer story selection and development, using data to break new ground in reporting, identifying opportunities to create leadership development content for print, while helping bring fresh business-focused angles to healthcare news, current events and policy. This editor will help line edit web news briefs on a daily basis. This editor also will assist in the conceptualization of our awards and recognition programs and lead the editing of this content. These are very visible, esteemed honors for industry leaders that the newsroom each year strives to improve upon when assigning profiles and trend stories related to the programs.

YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS

You’ll get to know your team and the wider organization, and how each group functions independently as well as part of the whole. You’ll establish key relationships with your peers and make decisions about our coverage in senior-level planning meetings. By day 7, you’ll contribute by editing enterprising breaking news, features, and analysis reporting for the website and magazine. You’ll also establish early goals for your reporters and our coverage as a whole.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

You are putting together coverage plans for your reporters, on both breaking and longer-form, in-depth news reporting. You bring terrific, relevant ideas inspired by some of our rich audience behavior data to pitch meetings and help coach colleagues to develop better pitches. You’re helping identify which stories work best for what platform. You’re inspiring reporters to do their best work. You’re regularly identifying future stories of interest to existing and potential Modern Healthcare audiences, and focusing our team to reflect those interests. You’ve developed trust with senior leadership and you have grown your own skills, shown by improved reporting, or new storytelling formats from your team. You’ll show a deep interest and investment in our engagement and revenue goals.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • A track record of developing and overseeing news and feature coverage and managing a team.
  • 7-10 years of journalism experience on complex financial topics, a specific interest and experience reporting on healthcare finance and operations; degree in journalism or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong detail-oriented writing and editing skills, including the ability to adapt material for multiple channels (print and digital)
  • Strong sense of what makes a good web story and how to deliver it with impact and then following up on audience reaction to it to see what can be improved in the future.
  • Assist in overseeing publication production, including artwork, layout, and printing, ensuring adherence to deadlines and budget requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy and grace under pressure.
  • Self-motivated, team-oriented and highly entrepreneurial.
