Global regulatory risk newswire MLex is looking for a senior editor for its Brussels bureau. This is an opportunity to cover a wide range of regulatory stories from competition to climate, and is suited both to experienced editors and to reporters with a flair for writing who want to make the switch. The successful candidate will be expected to mentor reporters and develop their story ideas, and there is potential for him or her to progress to more formal management responsibilities.
The role:
The core of the role is to handle copy from the Brussels and London bureaus across all MLex services: Competition, Data Privacy, Trade, Financial Services, Financial Crime, Digital Transport, and Climate. These are complex regulatory issues and the Senior Editor will need to develop a thorough understanding of them all in order to ask the right questions about sourcing or accuracy, or to put the reporting in context.
MLex is a real-time newswire and the successful candidate will be expected to turn around urgent copy quickly. With the support of the Europe Managing Editor, she or he will manage the daily copy flow and make decisions on which stories to prioritise at any given moment.
We also publish in-depth reporting and commentary, and the Senior Editor will work with reporters at all stages of this process, from conceiving the initial idea to crafting the finished product. The successful candidate will furthermore be expected to coach reporters on all aspects of the writing process.
The Senior Editor will help set the direction for MLex’s future coverage, whether by contributing to the Style Guide, exploring new topics with reporters, or deputising for the Managing Editor in a variety of areas. The role offers a path to more formal management responsibilities, and we are looking for a candidate who aspires to this.
The successful candidate must have the right to work full-time in Belgium. He or she will be expected to work in our Brussels office at least two days a week under our post-Covid hybrid working policy; the other three days may be worked from home (accurate as of September 2021, subject to revision).
What we are looking for:
- Rock-solid editing skills with attention to detail and accuracy
- Writing flair in both newswire and commentary formats
- Ability to understand a range of complex topics
- Multitasking and prioritising urgent stories
- Social skills to work with and mentor reporters
- Ambition to take on management responsibilities
