MLex seeks a researcher in Brussels

The MLex Brussels bureau is looking for a Research Assistant with genuine interest in journalism for a one-year contract. You should have an affinity to complex legal matters and EU affairs, especially in the field of data protection, artificial intelligence, and intellectual property. This affinity could be gained through education or work experience.

You should be ready to dive into difficult regulatory matters and decode legalistic language. Language skills are a clear asset as we work across many jurisdictions across Europe. A solid English working level is a must as you are expected to file clean news alerts in English.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring, gathering content mainly for the MLex data protection, artificial intelligence and intellectual property beats and sharing relevant items with reporters in real-time.
  • Processing news by summarizing content such as national decisions from various languages into English and uploading official material onto the MLex news site.
  • Conducting research online and by phone to assist journalists with their reporting.
  • Supporting reporters on stories by translating text passages, for example, or by drafting paragraphs.
  • Helping to create news archives and updating existing ones.
  • Digesting EU and Unified Patent Court documents on a regular basis.
  • Updating our GDPR tracker with the latest data-protection fines once per week.

Requirements:

  • Experience in the legal field, policy, public affairs, consultancy or journalism.
  • Able to write clearly in English.
  • Ability to concentrate during long hours.
  • Additional language skills such as German, French, Italian or Spanish are a clear asset.
  • Must be willing to work three days a week from our office which is located in central Brussels.
