Mercury News seeks an economy reporter

We’re looking to make a critical addition to a talented team at the Bay Area News Group, covering one of the most fascinating economies in the nation. What happens in the Bay Area resonates across the country and around the world — and our news organization has the ambition and ability to tell these stories with the impact they warrant.

Essential Functions

This reporter will explore the full range of the Bay Area’s economy, one of California’s most powerful regions, to write both breaking news and enterprise stories about  everything from how small businesses are emerging from the pandemic to how the rising cost of living is creating wider gaps and pushing teachers, firefighters and construction workers to live far from the communities they serve. Using data and a diverse source list, they will mine the topics of wages, job creation, economic recovery, wealth and poverty, explaining how those trends are reshaping not just neighborhoods, but entire cities and the future of work.

Competencies & Skills

If you’re a strong candidate you’ll have these qualities:

  • Excellent news judgment and demonstrated knowledge of economic issues

  • Strong writing under deadline pressure, for online and print audiences

  • A fascination and facility with data coupled with the skill and experience to analyze it and seek out new sources of information

  • Experience juggling multiple stories of varying complexity, from quick news posts and daily news stories to longer-term enterprise and features

  • At least four years experience as a working journalist

In our diverse region, facility with multiple languages is also a plus.

Required Education

  • 4-year college degree (journalism or related fields)

Required Experience

  •  4 years prior experience

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a professional office environment and at the Company and client sites for business meetings and presentations.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • This position may be a permanent remote role.
