Medium seeks head of business/tech content

The Head of Business/Tech on Medium’s Content Development team will drive the next phase of platform adoption with prominent tech and business leaders; VCs, entrepreneurs, and startup founders; C-suite executives; practitioners; and analysts who want to authentically publish to, and drive conversation forward in, the world.

Overview of the role

We are looking for an experienced outreach-focused relationship manager who will leverage his/her deep network, creativity, nose for news, and storytelling skills to help tech and business leaders make the most out of Medium.

The ideal candidate is a gifted writer and editor, with an extensive web of connections, who optimizes for quality over quantity, weighing strategic outreach, opportunities to engage around the news, and shoot-for-the-moon ideas that will have an outsize impact on Medium, and in the world.

This role is based in Medium’s New York or San Francisco office.

What will this role do?

Here’s a run-down of the responsibilities of the Head of Business/Tech on Medium’s Content Development team:

  • Develop and execute on strategies that drive high-quality, repeat usage by high-value writers in this space.
  • Recruit, onboard, edit, and coach prominent tech and business leaders; VCs, entrepreneurs, and startup founders; C-suite executives; practitioners; and analysts to make good use of the platform, both strategically and opportunistically around news events.
  • Develop unique editorial programming to prompt leading figures to write.
  • Brainstorm story ideas and edit posts.
  • Create and drive initiatives, often with external partners, that concentrate the attention of groups of writers around a common issue or agenda.
  • Collaborate with other Content Development teams (e.g. Politics, Entertainment, Community, News) on cross-functional initiatives.
  • Manage a growing Business/Tech team.
  • Define the message and create collateral that conveys the value proposition of joining the Medium network.
  • Channel feedback from these users that will guide new feature development.

Who will do well in this role?

Here are the essential skills and qualifications of a Medium Content Development team lead:

  • Minimum of eight years of experience working in fast-paced and dynamic tech/media environments, and maintaining close working and personal relationships with sector-specific stakeholders.
  • Natural communicator with a deep network and superior client service.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, and a proven editorial sensibility to help craft compelling narrative writing.
  • An obsessive newshound.
  • Passion for interesting stories and ideas.
  • Exceptional presentation and project management skills.
  • Ability to work well with multiple functions in a tech environment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Self-directed, flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working independently in a satellite office.

And, of course, this person should have a thorough knowledge of Medium, and love the platform and its mission.
