MediaNews Group seeks a reporter, Monterey County Herald

The general assignment reporter will cover issues in Monterey County, which will include, but is not limited to covering school board meetings and events as well as Monterey County events. Some city and county government coverage.

What you will do:

  • Writing at least five stories a week
  • Generating story ideas
  • Covering education, big events, and community news
  • Planning stories days, weeks and months in advance
  • Taking photos and videos when needed

What you will bring:

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Photography , video and social media skills
  • Competent in the English language and AP Style. Understanding of SEO and WordPress a plus
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required
  • Preferred experience working for a daily newspaper

Travel:

  • Assignment specific within Monterey County
  • Work is to be performed remotely, but reporter is required to live in the county in order to cover events
  • Reporter is required to drive to assignments

The hourly wage is $18.00 – $20.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
