Journo Jobs

MassLive Media seeks a news reporter, Worcester

MassLive is seeking a Worcester News Reporter who can develop rich connections with sources to not only break news but also dig deeper to write Big J, issues-based stories that promote conversation and prompt action.

This position will be based in MassLive’s downtown Worcester office, with a minimum of two days in-office attendance expected a week. Although this reporter will write about the big issues the state’s second-largest city faces, candidate will also look for opportunities to take a step back and put those issues into greater statewide context.

This isn’t a City Hall beat. This reporter will write about the things that matter most to our readers – including housing, development, social justice issues, education and “pocketbook issues” – in and around Worcester County, and often beyond.

The right candidate understands the importance of breaking news quickly and accurately, is versatile and can add a human perspective to hard-news stories. This is often a fast-paced beat in a dynamic newsroom, but you’ll also have time to dig deeper to find, report and write enterprise stories.

MassLive is the largest digital news website in Massachusetts, according to comScore. We thrive on delivering breaking news to readers wherever they are, quickly, as well as reporting deep-dive investigative journalism.

You should apply to our Worcester News Reporter role if you:

  • Are a reporter who can work with efficiency, creativity, accuracy and good judgment
  • Really want to be first to report something
  • Engage on social media platforms regularly and follow trends
  • Are a news junkie with a pulse on the big stories happening at any given moment
  • Have humility, a sense of humor, relentless curiosity and bring passion to your reporting
  • Have skills in digital storytelling via text, photo and video

Job requirements include:

  • Degree in journalism, communications, or related field
  • Proven talent in journalism reporting and writing with 2-3 years experience
  • Experience building, maintaining, and engaging an active audience
  • Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
  • Demonstrated capability in capitalizing on high-value topics by engaging audiences in frequency and urgency
  • Mastery of social media and digital interaction
  • Skills for utilizing a broad set of tools to tell stories and engage the audience

This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events.

When applying, include links to stories or your writing clips.
