Mashable seeks business reporter

Mashable is seeking a business reporter who wants to work with a smart, funny, disciplined and growing team whose mission is to make business not boring. The job will require, in part, learning about and writing about advertising –including the sagas of digital, mobile, and finding the new Don Drapers of the world — as well covering a plethora of other business topics depending on the news.

The ideal candidate is a good human being with multiple interests who likes to see teammates succeed; can write about humans in business in a way that even your mom will read; has the curiosity to tackle new subjects and tell new stories every day in formats both short and long; wants to add something to the sum of human knowledge; likes discussing stories with a team and thinking big; can write clearly; and is a general pleasure to be around. This person has at least two to three years experience of full-time writing and reporting and a digital presence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or another platform that involves reading and interacting with an audience.

The job is based in our sylvan, light-filled New York City headquarters with perks that include enormous windows, unlimited string cheese, and great coworkers who support each other.

  • A proven record of creating great stories and working well with an editor
  • Discipline to turn news stories around fast and develop longer pieces
  • Skill in developing and keeping sources who can give inside perspective
  • Really good at generating story ideas, then working with an editor to refine them
  • Even better at accepting assignments
  • Ideas for multimedia presentation of stories: video, pictures, charts, Periscopes.
  • A good understanding of the viral potential of advertising and an eagerness to jump on potentially viral subjects quickly.
  • Proven ability to work with a team and cheer others on
  • No, seriously, we work as a team

  • Positive attitude and belief that forward progress is actually possible
  • Willingness to work the occasional weekend day (each one gets a comp day later)
  • Knowledge in areas outside of business, including world news, politics, technology and social media
  • Familiarity with WordPress (not required to like it, though)
  • A firm belief that the internet is the future of journalism

The Day-to-Day

  • Write and report daily stories, ranging in format from smart quick hits to analysis to the occasional longer features

  • Pivot to cover news as it comes on a variety of business topics
  • Develop sources for original stories, on the phone and in person.
  • Identify trends and oddities in business
  • Collaborate with other departments and editorial channels including tech, video and photo
  • Create shareable, original business stories
  • Work well with an editor
  • Hang out with a bunch of cool people
