Mashable is hiring an experienced and energetic tech reporter to cover the rapidly changing world of consumer technology and the business of big tech from our San Francisco bureau. The ideal candidate has a background in journalism and demonstrates a strong foundational knowledge of the tech industry, from its products to its power players.
This role requires a deadline-oriented journalist who thrives in a fast-paced environment. A highly motivated individual with spot-on news judgment and a knack for original, grabby angles. A natural self-starter who’s full of ideas and always searching for potential stories.
The tech reporter is an authority on what’s happening at Facebook, Twitter, and other social media behemoths, and they can easily tackle complicated topics in a way that is entertaining and accessible.
Whether they’re reporting live from the hectic floor of a major product launch, reviewing a must-have new gadget, or writing a thinkpiece exploring the human side of technology, the tech reporter is a spirited storyteller.
Strong writing and reporting skills are a must, but style and voice are just as indispensable. Moreover, the tech reporter should be comfortable appearing on camera and keen on creating multimedia content to appear Mashable distributed platforms.
The tech reporter will report to Mashable’s tech editor and will ideally be based in the San Francisco area. (Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.)

The Day-to-Day
- Pitch 2-5 stories daily to tech editor and deputy tech editor.
- Write smart commentary, breaking news hits, reviews, and features.
- Review new products and software releases.
- Collaborate with Tech Editor on daily priorities for editorial coverage
- Write and publish 3-5 stories per day as needed
- Pitch and execute on ambitious features related to your beat
- Participate in Mashable series and theme weeks
- Help track product releases and assist with managing a production calendar for reviews.
- Promote Mashable content on Twitter and Facebook.
- Help produce stories for Snapchat and other distributed platforms as needed.
Qualifications
- Based in San Francisco.
- 3+ years writing for a media publication, with solid experience working for an online outlet.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of the digital space and Mashable’s core coverage areas.
