Marshall News Messenger seeks a sports editor

Are you passionate about local sports at all levels? Do you have experience writing about sports at the high school or college level?  If you do, this may be the position for you.

The Marshall News Messenger, a member of the M. Roberts Media East Texas family of newspapers, is seeking a Sports Editor to drive our coverage of local sport. So, what do you get? A close-knit, collegial newsroom where you will be empowered to do your best work. We’ll help you develop your social media and mobile reporting skills (photography, video, Facebook Live). You’ll learn how to use analytics as a tool to help inform coverage.

  • Also covering sports at East Texas Baptist University, Wiley College and area high schools in Harrison and Marion counties (Hallsville, Waskom, Harleton, Jefferson, Elysian Fields)
  • Using photography and videography to enhance sports coverage
  • Occasional work for special sections throughout the year
  • Working with freelancers to supplement sports coverage as needed
  • Collaborating with sister newspapers on sports coverage as needed
  • This job includes nighttime and weekend responsibilities, most especially during football season

Essential Qualifications include:
