“Marketplace” seeks senior tech reporter

The Senior Technology Reporter leads Marketplace in explaining in insightful and inventive ways how technology is changing the way we work, live, do business and communicate.

S/he should be steeped in all things tech, from social networking, to smart phones, to the inner workings of corporate giants like Apple and Google. S/he should be a knowledgeable insider when it comes to reporting and making sense of developments in the tech world, but a translator who leaves the jargon behind in crafting stories. Marketplace prides itself on bringing complex subjects into focus.

The senior reporter will conceive and execute original reports across Marketplace platforms – audio and digital –on the tech industry and how its products and innovations are reshaping society and the economy.

S/he also may fill in as host of the Marketplace Tech Report. Technology is a key coverage area for Marketplace, which covers business, the economy and money to inform and engage people so they can make better decisions about their lives.

Position Responsibility:

  • Work with Senior Editor to develop tech coverage, revealing and explaining how tech industry and its innovations shape the economy, everyday life and society.
  • Pitch and report ideas for daily spots and features on the subject of technology and innovation and their impact, for all Marketplace shows and Marketplace.org.
  • Conceive and execute in-depth, original, high-impact reporting.
  • Integrate development of original, high-impact digital projects and content with conceiving of coverage streams, series, features and short-term coverage.
  • Deliver substantive reports quickly on varied subjects as shows need.
  • Deliver live reports.
  • Consistently deliver stories with Marketplace’s writing style and pace.
  • Develop ideas/proposals for reports and programs, both by the reporter and by other reporters, hosts and commentators.
  • Provide breaking-news spots and live two-ways to the Morning Report as part of a rotation of reporters.
  • Possible back-up hosting for Marketplace Tech Report.
  • Gather information and audio for reports and programs.
  • Serve as lead reporter on special projects/series.
  • Produce or assist in producing special programming, as assigned.
  • Operate production and studio equipment and facilities.
  • Assist other reporters, producers and editors with information.
  • Maintain a wide variety of sources; expand involvement of Public Insight Network, including meetings and other events
  • Produce for website with writing and photography (supplying additional audio, visual material, related Web resources)
  • May oversee the work of interns
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

 

  • BA degree or equivalent experience
  • Seven or more years reporting or similar experience. Most experience should be at a national level.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

 

  • Able to consistently deliver stories with program writing style and pace.
  • Developing signature sound of voice and writing.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on short and long term projects.
  • Ability to collaborate with other Marketplace reporters and with other news organizations/partners.
  • Depth of knowledge and experience within a specialization are important but breadth in terms of general industry knowledge is required.
  • Handle complex topic areas.
  • Pitch original ideas and turn them into stories.
  • Superlative oral and written skills with ability to deliver originality in writing
  • Capacity to deliver quick turn-around reporting
  • Ability to develop stories with multiple interviews, scene changes and strong knowledge of subject matter.
  • Find unexpected angles in stories, even in saturated topics.
  • Ability to handle broad variety of complex assignments.
  • Ability to deliver top-quality stories on education.
  • Able to set fresh directions in stories – think outside the box
  • Knowledge of various process approaches and necessary resources for a given project/assignment
  • Demonstrated reporting and production skills
  • Ability to maintain high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of balance and fairness
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Skill in creative use of sound, writing and story telling
  • Ability to develop mastery of all recording and production equipment and techniques
  • Able to manage multiple assignments of short and long duration
