“Marketplace” seeks chief content officer

The Chief Content Officer (CCO) will position Marketplace as a top source of smart and accessible information about the economy among influencers and broader audiences alike. In addition to the traditional radio broadcasts, the CCO will help lead Marketplace in the on-demand space, specifically within the podcast market, extend the presence in the social space to drive more people to Marketplace content and increase website audience as a proxy for content engagement. The CCO will help insert Marketplace more consistently into the national conversation on newsworthy topics.

The CCO of Marketplace, will head a dynamic and creative team of content producers across platforms. S/he will be responsible for growing and developing the team needed to build a modern enterprise that is data-informed, audience-centric and competitive in today’s fast-changing media landscape. Working with the Head of Marketplace, the executive hired will be responsible for creating the leadership, vision, strategic planning, and daily administration of Marketplace’s content team.

This role will lead an ambitious shop, fueled by ambitious ideas. Good ideas are the currency of Marketplace. This is a place of creativity and unorthodox thinking. The Marketplace team prides itself on not taking themselves too seriously, even though they understand the critical importance of people understanding how the economy shapes the world around them. The candidate hired will be a driver in matching Marketplace’s ambition with the right people and infrastructure at a key time of investment in Marketplace.

Reports To: Head of Marketplace

Direct Reports:

• All Content leaders, including Senior Producers across shows and digital plus Managing Editor and Executive Producer

• Aggregator Content Creation teams
• On Demand teams
• Analytics and Engagement teams (to be built)

Overall Responsibilities:

1. Strategy and Vision:

  • Set editorial vision across all content production: on-demand, broadcast, video, streaming, mobile, events and anticipated future growth areas.
  • Translate the Marketplace brand personality across platforms and formats that our audiences prefer.
  • Align content around the Marketplace value proposition of raising the economic intelligence of the country through the unorthodox story, the casual conversation, and the unexpected angle on news.
  1. Organizational Development and Management
    • Transform newsroom structure from a legacy broadcast operation into an integrated multi- platform industry leader.
    • Work with the Head of Marketplace to provide vision, ideas and approaches for achieving the key strategic goals of Marketplace’s content group.
    • Propose and achieve measurable internal success criteria.
  2. Distribution and Audience Engagement
    • Build a strategic partnership with business team (revenue leaders) to identify key editorial areas around which to develop stand-out editorial moments for signature journalism with multi-platform strategies and diversified revenue streams. Create proactive, ongoing discussions between editorial and revenue generating teams.
    • Position Marketplace as the leader in data-informed decision making, including in-depth analysis to inform content choices on various platforms, development of audience centric services and increasing revenue potential as a result.
  3. Partnerships and Collaboration
    • Forge partnerships and external relationships with outside parties who can advance Marketplace’s news and public affairs mission.
    • Collaborate with content leaders across the APMG companies on shared content initiatives.
  4. Innovation
  • Stay abreast of innovations in the content and media world, including delivery systems and new distribution platforms in order to maintain industry-leading technical systems and processes.

6. Staff Development and Management

  • Lead a team of ambitious, creative content producers.
  • Hire, supervise, train, and manage direct staff through providing work direction, constructive performance coaching, mentorship, performance meetings, and on-going feedback.
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment. Create development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
  • Align job responsibilities and staff skills to maximize effectiveness.
  • Recruit, develop and manage show hosts and multi-skilled producers, resulting in top- performing shows.

Chris Roush

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
