MNI, a global financial news service, has an immediate opening for an experienced reporter to cover economic data and the economy for the Washington, D.C. bureau.
This position entails reporting on and analyzing government and private economic data reports, as well as topics in the broader economy. We are looking for someone who loves numbers, loves spreadsheets, loves to write and wants to delve into the data to find out what it means and what the implications are.
Experience reporting on economic data, the economy in general and economic policy strongly desired, along with an ability to spot important developments and break news. Must be a good team player willing to jump in where needed, and a multitasker who can fit into a fast-paced newsroom. We thrive on competition but offer a friendly and flexible work environment. Must be authorized to work legally in the United States.

Responsibilities:
- Cover regular data reports from government and private sources, writing headlines and stories and producing data tables, including attending data lockups regularly
- Maintain data spreadsheets and data calendars
- Collect data forecasts
- Develop regular enterprise stories and exclusive interview looking to analyze data trends in depth
- Cover other aspects of the economy, including sector specific and macroeconomic issues
- Handle sensitive, embargoed material with strictest confidence
- Work effectively with other members of the data team and other reporters and editors to improve MNI’s coverage and product offerings
Qualifications:
- BA in economics, statistics, business or related field, or comparable journalism degree and experience
- 3-5 years of reporting or comparable experience
- Familiarity with all aspects of Excel, creating and maintaining spreadsheets and generating graphics
- Expertise and/or interest in economics, the economy and data reports
- Ability to work under pressure with very tight deadlines while producing error-free work
- Acute attention to detail a must
- Solid writing and communication skills
- Ability and willingness to learn new tasks quickly and jump in where needed
- Familiarity with credit and currency markets, and issues of interest to those markets a plus
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
