M. Roberts Media seeks a sports editor

Are you passionate about local sports at all levels? Do you have experience writing about sports at the high school or college level? If you do, this may be the position for you. The Marshall News Messenger, a member of the M. Roberts Media East Texas family of newspapers, is seeking a Sports Editor to drive our coverage of local sport.

Our Sports Editor will know how to develop a sports beat and sources within that beat. As the sports editor you will be responsible for coverage of a variety of sports in Harrison and Marion Counties. You will also collaborate with our sports departments in Tyler and Longview. Responsibilities include live coverage, photography and video for youth, high school and college teams, and getting that coverage online daily and then two days a week in print.

So, what do you get? A close-knit, collegial newsroom where you will be empowered to do your best work. We’ll help you develop your social media and mobile reporting skills (photography, video, Facebook Live). You’ll learn how to use analytics as a tool to help inform coverage.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Priority coverage of Marshall High School sports and the MISD athletics program through game coverage, feature stories and more
  • Also covering sports at East Texas Baptist University, Wiley College and area high schools in Harrison and Marion counties (Hallsville, Waskom, Harleton, Jefferson, Elysian Fields)
  • Using photography and videography to enhance sports coverage
  • Occasional work for special sections throughout the year
  • Working with freelancers to supplement sports coverage as needed
  • Collaborating with sister newspapers on sports coverage as needed
  • This job includes nighttime and weekend responsibilities, most especially during football season

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism or a related field preferred. We will consider equivalent journalism experience.
  • One year of recent newspaper or website sports writing experience (newspaper internships or student publications are acceptable)
  • Solid understanding of how to report, write and deliver sports information online or in print in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance with acceptable driving record required
