Lowcountry Local Media, Inc. seeks an editor

Lowcountry Local Media, inc. is searching for the next editor of our community newspapers. An impending retirement has us searching for a talented individual to lead the editorial team of our intensely local newspapers.

The editor sets the overall tone for our newspapers through the assortment of story assignments, compilation of expertise columns submitted by community business leaders, placing columns from local mayors and other politicians, as well as enterprise stories crafted by freelance journalists and stringers. The editor will also write articles of local interest to share with our devoted readers.

We are looking for an editor to plan, develop, and execute engaging and informative local news for our well-respected newspapers.

Requirements:

  • Excellent writing and copy-editing skills
  • Strong attention to detail and creative skills
  • Proficient in AP style
  • Superior news judgement and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in journalism
  • Passion for storytelling and good writing
  • Flexibility, strong organizational skills
  • Collaborative in nature -, the ability to work with a team and the
    community are critical

Responsibilities:

  • Setting the editorial tone, quality, and culture of the Sun Newspapers
  • Staying abreast of local happenings, event, and stories
  • Leading the content development process from conception to the assigning, editing, rewriting, and laying out all copy in a newspaper with the exception of advertisements
  • Writing stories or editorials that offer opinions on issues
  • Reading content and correct spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors
  • Rewriting text to make it easier for readers to understand
  • Fact citing and verification in material for publication
  • Evaluating submissions from writers to decide what to publish
  • Working with writers to help their ideas and stories succeed
  • Developing story and content ideas according to the publications style and editorial policy
  • Allocating space for the text, photos, and illustrations that make up a story or content
  • Approving final versions submitted by staff

Salary: from $52,000 per year
