Los Angeles Times seeks a tech columnist

The Los Angeles Times is seeking a Business columnist to be our lead voice on the technology industry and how tech is changing the nature of work. This person will write tightly argued essays and news analyses that help readers make sense of technology’s effects on business, the economy, culture and politics. The ideal candidate will be open-minded and curious but confident in their judgments, a quick thinker and intimately familiar with key figures and companies in the Los Angeles and Silicon Valley tech ecosystems.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and write one or more weekly columns for online and print publication, mixing topics on and off the news and supporting opinions with reporting and data
  • Keep abreast of technology news, trends and issues through original reporting, thorough research and relationships with sources
  • Contribute to breaking news coverage as needed
  • Write occasional features
  • Contribute to multiplatform offerings including podcasts, newsletters and live events
  • Keep current on the tools and technologies available to produce and deliver journalism to readers
  • Lend your expertise and insight to newsroom teams, actively collaborating with editors and reporters
  • Represent The Times on other media platforms, including television, podcast and radio interviews

Requirements:

  • At least five years of professional journalism experience, with a background in covering technology, the future of work or related topics
  • Ability to write clean, stylish copy on the cadence of a daily newspaper
  • Creativity in finding unique angles on big stories and surprising or counterintuitive arguments
  • Ability to think beyond the column to other forums for our journalism

The position is listed as Columnist in the Los Angeles Times Guild and will be based in either El Segundo, Calif., or the Bay Area.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
