Las Vegas Review-Journal seeks biz reporter to cover tourism and casinos

The Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada’s top news organization, is looking for a smart, aggressive, experienced business reporter to cover resort-casinos, tourism and conventions – one of the top beats in our robust newsroom.

Tourism, gaming and conventions are the dominant industries in Las Vegas and the drivers of the local and state economies. The Review-Journal and reviewjournal.com need someone with big shoulders to join a team covering this all-important sector. We are looking for a reporter who can quickly turn a breaking news story for online publication, then beef it up with the necessary context, perspective and reaction for print and then do a 30-second video interview that hits the highlights.

The ideal candidate should have at least three years of significant experience covering business or other hard-news beats. Knowledge of the gaming industry and tourism is a plus.

Candidates also should have experience with publicly traded companies, business issues and finance. Applicants should be able to access public filings and financial statements and turn them into compelling stories. Experience with online publishing, social media and video skills also are valued.

Las Vegas is as dynamic a news market as anywhere in the country, and the Review-Journal is the area’s dominant news source. Southern Nevada is home to about 2.3 million people, plus up to 200,000 visitors on any given day. It is a diverse metro area with a vibrant downtown and cultural scene, and it’s a half-day drive or less to some of the West’s most spectacular outdoor recreation and national parks.

Among many honors, the Review-Journal won a 2021 National Headliner Award for public service journalism; received the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for deadline reporting two of the past four years in its circulation class; captured 31 Best of the West awards over the past three years; and was an Eppy Awards finalist in two of the past three years for best daily newspaper website with at least a million unique monthly visitors. We’re an innovative, collaborative newsroom that’s been featured twice in the past two years by the American Press Institute/Better News for our efforts to grow our digital audience.

The Review-Journal is an equal-opportunity employer and a drug-free workplace. A pre-employment drug screening is mandatory and, effective Oct. 15, 2021, all employees must provide proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Although the Review-Journal newsroom continues to work from home, this is not a remote position, and relocation to the Las Vegas Valley is mandatory.

To apply, email a cover letter, resume and your three best writing samples to Peter Johnson, deputy managing editor, at pjohnson@reviewjournal.com. Please put Business Writer and your name in the subject line.
