The Las Vegas Review-Journal is seeking an experienced reporter with strong writing skills to cover what is arguably the most important issue facing western states: water.
For more than two decades, the Colorado River basin has experienced historic drought and overuse, with Nevada’s Lake Mead and Arizona’s Lake Powell seeing record-low levels in recent years. The Review-Journal’s water reporter will look at how water is consumed, how it is conserved and how it is wasted – not only in the Las Vegas Valley, but in all the Colorado River basin states, while also exploring the politics behind the decisions that determine water policy.
This reporter must be equally adept at covering breaking news on deadline, writing quick hits for online, and crafting compelling enterprise stories that explore water issues more deeply. Experience requesting and reporting from public records – especially federal documents – is preferred. Video skills and a willingness to appear in front of the camera are required.
This reporter also may be enlisted to take the lead writing about major breaking news stories, as well as write occasional general assignment enterprise that doesn’t fall under anyone else’s beat. Political reporting experience is a plus, because all staff writers will be expected to contribute to 2024 election coverage.
