LA Times seeks California economy reporter

The Los Angeles Times is looking for an experienced reporter to cover the world’s fourth-largest economy, California.

The position calls for strong reporting on topics such as labor, immigrant workers, the gig economy, trade, competitiveness, automation and AI. A successful candidate would be able to compose a smart list of enterprise ideas and work with colleagues to conceive of creative uses of video and data. They would be equally capable of cranking out a short post on a state jobs report or organizing and executing a major investigative project. Skilled writing is a must, as is the ability to translate sometimes complex economic subjects for a general audience.

Responsibilities:

  • Report and write stories across a broad economy beat, with an ability to turn around breaking news, step-backs, explainers, news features, analysis and, when appropriate, investigations
  • Monitor trends in user behavior and content and find compelling stories to tell
  • Cover breaking news and major events with an eye to unique angles that will set Times coverage apart
  • Cultivate sources and contacts to aid in the execution of a range of stories
  • Find ways to “localize” national and international economic stories through a California lens
  • Develop and write enterprise features that make waves
  • Represent The Times on other media platforms, including television and radio interviews and live event appearances
  • Contribute to multiplatform offerings including podcasts, newsletters and live events
  • Work collaboratively across departments to plan digital publication strategies
  • Write engaging headlines and SEO components with a digital, diverse audience in mind

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 10 years of journalism experience, with an emphasis on business reporting
  • Exceptional and versatile writing and reporting skills, combining strong news judgment, fluency in style and deep knowledge of taste and legal considerations
  • An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes positive collaboration
  • An understanding of the importance of accuracy and precision
  • Comfortable with data, statistics and basic financial lingo
  • Proven track record of scoops and unique angles and a desire to tell stories in different forms

This position is listed as Reporter in the Los Angeles Times Guild and will be based in El Segundo, Calif. Some night and weekend work is expected. Reporters must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle in good working condition, with suitable auto insurance coverage.

Qualified candidates should send a resume, cover letter and applicable clips to Business Editor Richard Verrier.
