Kiplinger seeks a managing editor

Kiplinger, a dynamic and forward-thinking Washington, D.C.-based publisher of online and print information, seeks an experienced editor to manage a monthly newsletter that covers retirement and pre-retirement matters, and to contribute to other Kiplinger publications, print and digital.

The successful candidate will be experienced and comfortable producing products in different formats, and working within a deadline to create timely, accurate, engaging pieces.  This editor will manage the publication of the monthly print Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, collaborate on contributions to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, contribute to Kiplinger.com on a regular basis, and contribute to and help launch a variety of ancillary products and services.  The strongest candidate will have a deep understanding of the subject area of retirement, including tax and estate planning, IRAs and pensions, insurance, long-term care, income-producing strategies, Medicare, Social Security, charitable giving, technology, and travel.  The candidate will also be experienced and comfortable producing products in different formats, and working within a deadline to create timely, accurate, engaging pieces.

Other essential functions of the position include:

  • Manage all aspects of planning, assigning, editing, and producing a monthly 20-24 page print publication.
  • Oversee a staff of full-time editors and freelancers to provide content for the print publication, as well as contributions in the subject area for Kiplinger digital publications and other Kiplinger products.
  • Direct coverage to capture retirement news and trends, along with key evergreen topics.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with different groups both within and outside of the Kiplinger organization, including the Kiplinger digital team; other Kiplinger publication staffs; public relations team; sales, marketing, and circulation.  Work with various constituencies to drive traffic and attention to the publication and individual stories.
  • Collaborate with the advertising team to ensure proper placement of ads and to spot opportunities to work together to create additional revenue.
  • Manage the monthly production process of the print publication, including selecting photos and illustrations; determining layout; copy-editing; writing headlines; and fitting copy using InDesign.

A successful candidate for the position will have at least a bachelor’s degree and five years of appropriate experience.

The Kiplinger Washington Editors, Inc., produces products available in multiple formats and platforms, including print, online, and via podcast.  It is part of the larger, global Dennis Publishing group. Among Kiplinger’s better known publications are the monthly Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and The Kiplinger Letter, a weekly business and economic forecasting periodical for people in management.
