Black writers: I’m looking for pitches for Kindred by Kindred is focused on the Black family, not just parenting and parents. I’m looking for original reporting, fresh ideas, and Blackity Black perspectives.

The go-to guide for parenting effectively in today’s world, Parents is committed to helping moms and dads “raise the future.” Kindred is Parent’s community/section that offers support and solutions for people raising up a generation of free Black children.

Note that I am not looking for nonreported straight essays—only essays that take a personal narrative and use it to put a lens on a wider issue or topic.

Please read before you pitch.

  • First, give me the working headline in the subject line. Be sure to lead with PITCH and a colon first so your email doesn’t get buried.
  • I love to see how writers are gonna write. Give me a bit of that in the first couple of sentences. Feeling fancy? Write the first couple of sentences as the lede of the piece you’re proposing.
  • Next, what are you going to report on? Make sure it’s also clear here why this story you’re proposing is important. What’s the takeaway?
  • How are you going to tackle the reporting? Link me to a study, tell me what type of sources you have in mind, etc.
  • Now, I got this far, so I want to know about you! Who are you and what have you done before? Give me the receipts! Clips or website/portfolio, please. Send to me at kelly dot glass at Meredith dot com, and thank you for trusting me with your work!

Can writers outside the US pitch? Yes.

  • Write a short introduction about yourself
  • Include a paragraph highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits
  • Attach links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.

  • $250-$400 per article – Rates for reported essays, entertainment roundups, how-tos/explainers/guides sit around $250 and $400 for reported features.
