The Kansas City Business Journal is seeking a reporter who is fascinated by the ever-changing worlds of health care and technology.
This beat combines coverage of a spectrum of health issues, ranging from insurance to the biomedical startup, with coverage of the area’s largest tech companies, including Sprint, Cerner and Garmin. We’re looking for a candidate who isn’t satisfied with reporting the news, but who has the drive to unearth it and the ability to understand and anticipate it. The successful candidate must own the beat, on social media platforms, online and in print.
Duties
Business Journal reporters must be able to identify main players on their beats and cultivate them as sources. The publication’s success relies on getting local business news learned by talking to sources rather than waiting on news releases. Our reporters work to disseminate the news the way people want to receive it. They use social media to get out immediate news and to initiate a conversation with the community. They must master the ability to break news online, adding new material and perspective as stories develop. They also provide print readers a reliable source of the most important information on beats, explaining what’s happened and what’s next through profiles, graphics and long-form cover stories.
Skills
We want committed journalists: people who simply must find out news before the competition, yet realize the responsibility to be fair and accurate. We need reporters who are able to build trusting professional relationships with top sources and who constantly are working to expand and diversify source networks. We must have reporters who have the mental agility to the core and lasting elements of journalism with the rapid changes brought on by technology and new business models.
