Kansas City Business JournalThe data journalist/researcher at the Kansas City Business Journal is charged with compiling data for the Business Journal’s signature lists and using this, and other sources, to tell compelling local business stories through words and graphics.

The Business Journal’s original, local research is a foundational component of our coverage, in print and online. We are looking for someone up to the challenge of gathering data from local businesses through direct surveys and other means, maintaining our proprietary database, and leading production of our annual Book of Lists.

We also want someone capable of telling stories gleaned from our research and from outside sources.

The data journalist/researcher will produce — independently and in collaboration with reporters and editors — original stories, packages based on a particular list and material to complement news and feature coverage.

Duties

– Locate and survey area companies to produce weekly lists (for example, Top Area Law Firms, Largest Area Private Companies, Highest-Paid Public Company Executives, etc.). Our target is 100 percent accuracy.

– Continually work to expand and update the list of companies to be surveyed

– Participate in daily and weekly editorial meetings to plan coverage and spot opportunities to contribute data, analysis or graphics

– Produce stories and graphics ranging from short online items based on newly available or historical trend data to analysis of weekly lists to large data-driven story packages

– Update and correct all lists for inclusion in the annual Book of Lists

– Provide research assistance to reporters and editors

– Regularly participate in Business Journal-sponsored events

To apply, send a resume, clips and a cover letter to editor Brian Kaberline at bkaberline@bizjournals.com.
