KFF, the non-profit health policy analysis, polling and journalism organization, is seeking a St. Louis-based editor/correspondent to join the staff of Kaiser Health News (KHN), the national newsroom producing and distributing in-depth journalism about health issues across the country. KHN has a vibrant and ambitious staff based in Washington, D.C., California, Missouri, Colorado and Montana.
We are seeking journalists with a strong interest in exposing the problems and illuminating possible solutions to one of the most pressing concerns of Americans: their health care. We are looking for someone who can both write and edit strong stories on state and regional struggles over health care that can be amplified for a national audience. We want scoops; we want analyses; we want lively people-centric features. We want you to help infuse our coverage with rapid-fire reporting and thoughtful writing on the big issues affecting people in the Midwest. Your job is to make sense of policy-making and politics – and more. Be a wonk, but be one who sees the humanity of this job.
The job is primarily a combination editing and reporting job, so we are hoping to find a self-starter who is a constant fountain of ideas and has the skills to whip a story into shape. We’d like you to have four or more years of experience (preferably with significant experience covering health issues). Knowing how to tell stories with data is a plus. Since the corporations that control our health care and the government programs and regulations that finance and shape it are a big part of the story, knowledge of business and policy is essential. Experience editing – or at least an interest in it – would be an asset to work with freelancers throughout the region. Knowledge of the Missouri and Midwest media landscape would also be valued to help develop partnerships with other newsrooms.
We’d like someone who wants to be part of an ambitious and fast-growing organization and can collaborate and contribute to daily stories, big projects, investigations and podcasts.
Tell us why you want to work at this great organization and why no one else could do this job better than you could. We’re excited to hear from you.
We are also willing to pay to relocate you, though we’d prefer a person who already has sources in the region. We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, and we have enviable health insurance and retirement benefits.
KFF staff are currently working remotely due to COVID-19. Once staff are able to return to the office this full-time position will be based in KFF/KHN’s Missouri office.
