Jacksonville Daily Record seeks a reporter

The Jacksonville Daily Record, a news organization that covers business, development, the courts and regional government in Northeast Florida, is seeking an experienced journalist to cover city government and related agencies.

Founded in 1912, the Jacksonville Daily Record is published weekly in print and daily online at JaxDailyRecord.com.

The Daily Record prides itself on being accurate, reliable and fast, consistently breaking stories before other media. We are an award-winning team of experienced journalists.

The job

This person will cover city and regional government, focusing on how it intersects with business in Northeast Florida.

Jacksonville is a vibrant, fast-growing city with a newly elected mayor and administration with a hand in many business dealings that demand coverage.

Examples of some of the stories you will be covering:

  • The city’s dealings with the Jacksonville Jaguars on a more than $1 billion stadium renovation.
  • Multimillion-dollar incentives deals for industry and other development.
  • Growth, development and other business-related legislation as it moves through city government.
  • Reporting on the $1.75 billion city budget and its millions assigned for capital improvement projects.

The job doesn’t end there.

We are an experienced, small and agile team. There is no job too large or small for any of us. The more skills you can bring, or be willing to learn, the better.

Everyone on staff contributes by reporting, writing stories, editing copy, proofing pages, taking photos, researching records and posting stories online and on social media. You may also represent the paper at events and network in the area.

For example, you may be asked to rewrite a news release, take a photo or contribute to a special section outside of your usual beat. This job is for someone ready to do anything that helps the team and keeps us a step ahead of our competition.

When it comes to writing voice, we do not deal in reporters’ or editors’ opinions. We report the facts and require objectivity.

 Work environment:

The hours for this position generally are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but news can happen anytime and we are a flexible organization. Government meetings you may need to attend can be in the evenings.

The opportunity to make a difference in Greater Jacksonville; to work with top-flight editors and writers; to grow professionally and personally; and to be rewarded when you excel.

Competitive pay commensurate with experience.
